How To Maintain Your Tires
You can best care for your tires with a regular service schedule. Correctly maintained tires return their longest life and best performance, and will wear evenly as a result of being properly aligned. Here are a few ways to properly maintain your tires:
Tire Rotation
Tire rotation is the process of taking your tires from one position on your vehicle and moving them to another. Many cars are built with unequal weight distribution, which affects how your tires wear in the front versus the rear. For example, front-wheel drive vehicles often bear more weight on the front axle than the rear. Tire rotation helps even the load over time so the front and rear tires wear at the same rate. It is usually recommended that you perform a tire rotation every 10,000 miles.
Keep Your Tires Properly Inflated
Keeping your tires properly inflated is essential to avoiding a sudden blowout. Over-inflated tires could explode or become damaged if you hit a bump or pothole, while underinflated tires are prone to sidewall failure. The trick is to keep your tires inflated at the manufacturer’s recommended PSI so your tires can deliver their best performance. Your tires’ recommended PSI can be found on the driver’s side door sill. Once your tires are at the correct pressure, we recommend checking them once a month.
Tire Balancing
Although tires are made with great precision, tiny imperfections during the manufacturing process can cause them to vibrate once they begin to spin. Wheel balancing involves one of our tire service mechanics placing small weights on the side of your tire to offset these imbalances.
Tire Alignment
Tire alignment, also known as wheel alignment, requires one of our ASE-certified mechanics to hook your vehicle up to a specialized machine to measure the angle of your wheels. If your wheels are not pointing perfectly straight, it can cause your car to pull to one side instead of driving in a straight line.
While this may seem like little more than an annoyance to some drivers, constantly having to correct your vehicle to travel in a straight line is very hard on your tires. Misaligned tires will suffer from accelerated wear, either on the inside or outside of the tire.
Tire Repairs Can Include:
At Parra Car Care, we don't just provide tire maintenance services. We also provide
trustworthy tire repair. Here are a couple of ways we can do that:
Tire Patch
Tires can be expensive — so it's always good news when tires can be repaired instead of replaced. If you run over a nail or a bolt, we may be able to patch your tire. If our experts discover that your tire can be repaired, we will install a specially designed rubber plug into the puncture point of your tire and seal it in place so your tire can be re-inflated.
Valve Stem
If you notice your tire is slowly losing air, but you can't find any holes or nails in your tire, your valve stem may be defective or damaged. Because the valve stem protrudes from the side of your wheel, it's prone to damage if you scrape a curb or hit a pothole. The good news is that your valve stem may be repairable.
It's important to note that not all types of tire damage can be repaired. These are a few kinds of tire damage that cannot be fixed:
