Understanding Why Tire Size Is Vital

One of the first things that you'll need to know about your tires is what size they are. Tires are available in a multitude of sizes, and it's vitally important that you install the correct size tires on your vehicle. Installing tires that are either too large or too small for your wheels can drastically affect your vehicle's performance.

For example, installing tires that are too small on your vehicle can affect your speedometer, and cause a false speed reading. This is because your vehicle is calibrated to run with a certain size wheel and tire. Additionally, using a tire that is too large, can also negatively affect your handling and cornering abilities.

How to Read Tire Size

If you look at the side of your tire, you'll notice a series of numbers and letters. Not to be mistaken with your tire’s serial number, your tire size will appear a in large, easy-to-read font, and will look something like this: P225/35/19

Let's break down what these numbers mean:

P – Tire Type

For most cars, vans, and SUVs, your tire size will start with the letter “P”. This letter stands for “Passenger”, and means that you’re looking at a P-Metric tire that meets United States safety standards for passenger vehicles. If your tire size starts with “LT”, this means that your tires are engineered for lightweight pickup trucks. These types of tires are engineered to withstand higher inflation pressures and greater loads.

225 – Tire Width

The first set of numbers after the first letter of your tire size is an indication of your tire width. This number is generally measured in millimeters and will let you know how wide your tires are. In this example, the '225' is representative of tires that are 225 mm wide.

35 – Aspect Ratio

After the slash, the first two numbers are a representation of your tire's height. Rather than being measured in millimeters, like your tire width, this figure represents the aspect ratio of your tire height in relation to its width. In this example, the ‘35’ means that this tire's height is equal to 35% of its width. An easy way to remember how to decipher tire height is easy: the larger the aspect ratio, the larger the tire's sidewall will be.

R – Construction

The letter ‘R’ after the aspect ratio stands for “Radial”. This means that the tire layers run radially across the tire.

19 – Wheel Diameter

The last two numbers in a tire size are a representation of the wheel that this tire is intended to fit onto. In this example, ‘19’ means that this tire is made for 19-inch wheels. If the last two numbers of your tire size are 21, this means that your tires are made for 21-inch wheels.

Understanding Tire Types

When drivers come into our Euless tire shop, they are sometimes surprised and confused when they discover the many types of tires that are available to them. From all-season to off-road, we feature many different types of tires to measure your unique needs. Here are a few examples of the different types of tires that are available to you:

  • All Season Tires: This is a common tire type that offers balanced performance throughout the year.
  • Performance Tires: Typically, these tire types use softer compounds for enhanced grip but wear faster than all season tires.
  • Summer Tires: This tire type is designed for both wet and dry conditions but is not good in snow, ice, or inclement weather.
  • All Terrain Tires: This tire type is typically designed for SUVs, these types feature deep grooves for light to moderate offroading.
  • Winter Tires: This tire type often features heavy siping and deep grooves to help expel snow and offer added attraction. Available both studied and non-studded, these types of tires sometimes feature added grooves for extra traction on ice.
